Film: “What’s Race Got to do With It” - This documentary film chronicles the journey of a diverse group of students participating in a 15-week intergroup dialogue program at U.C. Berkeley. As the students share personal stories, debate hot topics, and confront one another about the role race plays in their lives, they make discoveries about their preconceived ideas and assumptions, and in so doing, help us begin to disentangle our own. The film goes beyond identity politics, celebratory history and guilt trips to help viewers “see through” achievement myths and create a safe space for open, honest exchange, particularly within educational environments.

Film: “A Civil Action” - In recognition and celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Superior Court in Massachusetts, Nichols College is collaborating with Institutions across the state by showing films relevant to the courts system. About the film. A true story of how environmental toxins in the town of Woburn, Massachusetts contaminated the area’s water supply, and was linked to a number of deaths of neighboring children. Jan Schlichtmann (John Travolta), a cocky and successful attorney who zips around town in his Porsche, and his small firm of personal injury lawyers are called upon to take legal action against those responsible. After originally rejecting a seemingly unprofitable case, Jan finds a major environmental issue that has a lot of impact potential and a couple of defendants with deep pockets.

On September 18, 2004, Scott Maloney’s life was changed forever. He was rushed to the emergency room after taking a fall from a roof-top after a night of drinking at Becker College. His parents were told to say good-bye to their son, that there was no hope, that their son had suffered a traumatic brain injury. But through the miracles of modern medicine, prayer and determination, Scott has recovered and is prepared to share his story.

Olympic hurdler Tonie Campbell, who made the U.S. team in 1980, 1984, and 1988,
will discuss what he has learned from his experiences as a world class hurdler, coach
and entrepreneur. Mr. Campbell won the bronze medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.
Tonie will speak about an Olympic odyssey, from boycott, award stand, to chairman,
“the business of the sport of track and field.”

Bruno is an eight-year-old German boy who leads a very comfortable life in Berlin during the Second World War. His father is a high ranking Nazi officer, and things change when the family has to move due to his father’s new post. In his innocence, Bruno sees the nearby concentration camp as a ‘farm’ and wonders why its inhabitants are always wearing striped pajamas. Eventually Bruno becomes friends with a Jewish boy his own age who lives on the other side of the fence and the story unfolds.

The 60s were over, but were they really? As the 70s began, the Vietnam War, the draft and Richard Nixon were still with us and so was some of the best rock music ever made! Groups like Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd were just reaching their full potential in the early 70s. Singer-songwriters such as James Taylor, Elton John and Joni Mitchell would make rock music more personal than ever. By the mid 70s, rock was no longer the music of the counterculture, it WAS the culture.

For nine years, Esera Tuaolo excelled in the N.F.L. as a defensive lineman: he played for five different teams and went to Super Bowl XXXIII with the Atlanta Falcons. Musically talented, he sang the national anthem in uniform as a rookie and at the 1999 Pro-Bowl. But as a gay man in the hyper-masculine culture of professional football, Tuaolo was forced to hide his sexuality. The secret crippled him, leading him to drink excessively and contemplate suicide. He led a double life that deeply depressed him, but which he now looks back on with a new perspective. It was after retiring from professional football that Tuaolo became fed up with pretending to “be straight.” He publicly announced his sexuality, which he described as “taking off a costume I’ve been wearing all my life.” One of only three former N.F.L. players to ever come out, he has received huge amounts of support; from old teammates, the media, friends and family alike. Esera has retired to pursue a career in acting and singing.

Coke Cola host a High School student to college event.  It is a program run during the school year working with high school students who are the first generation to go to college in their family.  During late June and early July they visit 5 different college campuses and Nichols is on the list this year.  Eighty high school juniors will visit the campus attend some lectures and stay over night.

Based on real life events, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, (played by Kevin Bacon), a volunteer military escort officer, accompanies the body of 19-year old Chance Phelps back to his hometown of Dubois, Wyoming.  Along the way, he encounters hundreds of people who express their heartfelt gratitude and patriotism.

Martinez share his story of strength and recovery following the trauma of sever burns and injuries he recevied from the explosion of a land mine in Iraq in 2003. He spent 34 months in treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas. After his recovery, J.R. has inspired the lives of others through his amazing story of resilience, perseverance and optimism.

As part of the Cross Campus Critical Issues Program, the David Maxwell Trio will perform Blues music highlighting how music relates to periods of economic turmoil. In one of the most famous trials in history, John Scopes, a high school biology teacher, was arrested and put on trial for violating a state law that prohibited teaching evolution in public schools. “Just how funny is comedian and actress Loni Love? Ask both Variety and Comedy Central, both of which have named her among their Top 10 Comics to Watch, or Campus Activity magazine, which honored her as its Hot Comic for 2009. Currently the host of the E! series “Wildest TV Show Moments,” Love is not only one of the most hilarious and lovable comics performing stand-up on the comedy club and college circuits but also a busy TV host, guest and actress who has also appeared in films and dramatic plays.

Love starred in her own half-hour special for Comedy Central in 2007 and has also been seen on the channel’s “Premium Blend,” “Weekends at the DL” and “Chocolate News”. Her many television appearances include “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn,” “The Best Damn Sports Show Period”, VH1’s “I Love the 70’s/80’s/90’s,” “Vh1’s The Great Debate” and “Comics Unleashed” among numerous others.

Love has enjoyed a recurring role on the Nickelodeon show “Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide” as well as guest starring roles on UPN’s “Girlfriends” and the CBS sitcom “Worst Week.” She has also been a guest host on “GSN Live,” and is a regular panelist on E!s hit show “Chelsea Lately” and TruTV’s “The Smoking Gun Presents: The World’s Dumbest”.

In 2009 Loni became a CNN correspondent for the show “D.L. Hughley Breaks the News” covering the inauguration of President Barak Obama. Currently, Loni is working on her first one hour special for Comedy Central scheduled to premiere 2010. Loni’s first love is performing for live audiences. Comedian Johnny Cardinale

Johnny Cardinale began his comedy career at the world famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, CA, where he was spotted by the owner, Mitzi Shore, and given weekly spots on her line-up alongside comedians such as: Carlos Mencia, Chris Rock, Joe Rogan, to name a few, as well as a nationwide tour with Pauly Shore.

He has since gone on to perform at all the major clubs in Los Angeles, write and direct a short film that screened at Cannes (”American Beauty X” which can be viewed at Ifilm.com) and has hosted “Clean Shots” on the Game Show Network. ??He was also featured on the Emmy Awards in a spoof of the hit show “Heroes”, and has been featured on “Chelsea Lately” on the E! channel.

In his stand-up act, he observes a lot of absurdities in life and talks quite a bit about his family. Johnny also brings his guitar with him to poke fun at the music industry as he can sound like seemingly any musical artist. Often compared to Adam Sandler and Jimmy Fallon, Johnny’s act is clean, and upbeat. A review from a recent college show pretty much sums it up best:

“…The similarity between Cardinale and Sandler is their expert use of music as a satirical device, but the similarities end there. Sandler’s pieces are characteristically off-color and border on offensive to just about everybody. Cardinale, with his uncanny ability for mimicking an artist’s vocal style, is the better satirist, using the songs’ very lyrics to point out how foolish some things really are while simultaneously keeping the show PG-13.”

In 1787 delegates gathered in Philadelphia to address a wide variety of crises facing the young United States of America and produced a charter for a new government.  In modern times, competing political and legal claims are frequently based on what those intended.  This program explores the cast of characters called “founders,” the problems they faced, the solutions they fashioned, and why these issues are important for you today.

Presented by Richard A. Hesse, J.D., Georgetown University, Professor Emeritus, Franklin Pierce Law Center; published widely on a variety of legal and ethical topics.  Professor Hesse served as a community lawyer in Philadelphia heading a police community relations project before moving to Boston to head a national project focused on the constitutional rights of consumers.  At FPLC he concentrated on state and federal constitutional law and international human rights.  Hesse has been an advocate for civil and human rights for more than 25 years and was twice awarded the Bill of Rights Award by the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union.

Rebuilding Hope follows three young men who fled their villages in South Sudan due to civil war when they were small children.  They grew up in refugee camps and resettled in the USA in 2001.  Accompanied by filmmaker Jen Marlowe, NICHOLS GUEST SPEAKER on October 6, these young men, now in their twenties, embark on a journey back to Sudan to discover whether their homes and families have survived, what the current situation is in South Sudan, and how they can help their communities rebuild after devastating civil war.

After The Fire

September 21 is the International Day of Peace. 

Three students died and 58 were injured in the January 2000 fire that arsonists set in the student lounge at Seton Hall University.  Among the victims were Shawn Simons and Alvaro Llanos, roommates from poor neighborhoods who had made their families proud by getting into college.  Newark Star Ledger reporter Robin Fisher tells the story of the two “most badly burned” survivors, proceeding from the devastating fire through the grueling medical treatment into their life-affirming futures.  A medical education and a dectective story unfold as Robin joins a reporter’s curiosity and objectivity to a near-familial access to the principals.

Nichols College is participating in a national program to screen this film in connection with the National Day of Peace on September 21.  Our screening on September 22 is a local premiere.

Little town of Bethlehem, a documentary film, follows the story of three men of three different faiths and their lives in Israel and Palestine.  The story explores each man’s choice of nonviolent action amidst a culture of overwhelming violence.

Their three stories are interwoven through the major events of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, starting with the 1972 massacre at the Munich Olympics and following through the first Intifada, suicide bombings in Israel, the Oslo Acords, the assassination of Yitzchak Rabin, and the second Intifada. Sami, Yonatan, and Ahmad each describe the events from their unique perspective, interjecting personal relfections and explaining how these events led them to become involved in the nonviolence movement.

All three men have had their lives threatened by members of their own communities as a result of their work.  Sami, Yonatan, and Ahmad continue to embrace their common humanitiy and equality for all, daring to have the hope that peace in the Holy Land can be achieved through nonviolent struggle. 

As the U.S. approaches the opening of peace negotiations once again in the region, this film can add a level of historical background to better understand the issues at stake.

Award-winning author Monique Truong will read from her new novel Bitter in the Mouth and talk about life as a writer.  Ms. Truong was born in Saigon in 1968 and moved to the United States at age six.  She graduated from Yale University and the Columbia University School of Law, going on to specialize in intellectual property.  Truong co-edited the anthology Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry and Prose, and her essay “Welcome to America” was featured on National Public Radio.  Her first novel, The Book of Salt, was a NY Times Notable Book in 2003.  Monique is slipping away  from her book tour to join us on campus.

Does art merely reflect a deeply damaged world, or can it inspire change?  Jen Marlowe, director, author, and human rights activist, explores this question with audiences from all walks of life.  Jen will talk about the making of her documentary Rebuilding Hope, the story of three “Lost Boys” returning home after civil war forced them to flee Sudan as young children. This program, featuring footage from the documentary, will present a comprehensive look at the crisis in Sudan, its historical roots, and human cost.

For decades, readers throughout the world have enjoyed the marvelous stories and illistrations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. But few know the work Geisel did as a political cartoonist during World War II.  Commentary by the historian Richard H. Minear places them in the context of the national climate they reflect.  One of the country’s leading historians of Japan during World War II, Minear is a professor emeritus of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
